Haggai: Restore & Renew

More and more I’m blown away by the way God providentially aligns our sermon series to speak to pressing issues in the life of our church community. In the fall of 2022 I’d started praying about jumping into the short prophetic writing of Haggai. I had no idea that it would align almost perfectly with our moving into a new physical space. In Richard Lovelace’s stellar little book, Renewal As A Way Of Life (the content of which originally came from some lectures given at Lake Luzerne right up the road from us!) I was gripped by a passing reference to the book of Haggai as he mentioned it as thematically dealing with the topic of renewal. I scratched my head, thinking, “I don’t recall that being a prevalent theme at all!” This prompted my reading its short two chapters over again with new eyes and lo and behold, renewal is all over Haggai! We’ll have to work to mine its depths because on the surface it’s about prioritizing the work of rebuilding God’s temple over the work of one’s home. Reading in light of the New Covenant, however, reveals to us that the Holy Spirit dwells not in buildings made by men but in the hearts of men who are born again. May that same Spirit bring renewal in our midst and restore what is distorted. May He continue to form us more into the image of Jesus through His Word.
