Ecclesiastes: Under The Sun
Some will tell you it’s a foil. And there’s a good chance they’re right.
What’s a foil? Well, when it comes to the book of Ecclesiastes they’d tell you that it’s a way of “reflecting” from below a reality that exists up above. In other words, a way of point us by contrast to something greater.
Some will tell you Ecclesiastes is a dark and depressing book. They too, wouldn’t necessarily be wrong. But what we’ll see as we journey through it is that it only takes the smallest amount of light to dispel the thickest of darkness.
Ecclesiastes forces us to confront the millions of things we occupy ourselves with “under the sun.” And to confess that they all fail to satisfy. Futility, vanity, mist. We cling to them but they keep slipping through our fingers.
While the good gifts keep slipping through our fingers, our hope is that we’ll see we aren’t slipping through Christ’s fingers. He holds us even as our grip slips. As we journey through this book of wisdom, our prayer is that we’ll experience anew Jesus’s invitation for our restless hearts to find rest in him.
